Johnson, Republicans Give Big Update on January 6 Investigation

House Speaker Mike Johnson and the Republican overseeing the inquiry are currently at an impasse regarding the next steps in their investigation into the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

As per three sources knowledgeable about the negotiations, Johnson is urging Republicans to limit the focus of the prior January 6 committee’s inquiry and to stop further investigations, which includes former GOP Representative Liz Cheney.

Conversely, certain officials from the White House, who have designated GOP Representative Barry Loudermilk to oversee the investigation, are in favor of a broader mandate. CNN has previously reported that President Donald Trump expressed to Johnson prior to his inauguration that he wished for this investigation to be a primary focus.

As reported by various sources, the newly formed select subcommittee led by Loudermilk, which was announced by Johnson in January, has yet to commence its activities due to an ongoing behind-the-scenes conflict that has hindered negotiations. Loudermilk stated to CNN on Thursday, “I informed former Speaker Kevin McCarthy that I would take on this challenge under two stipulations: I require the independence and resources essential for an unbiased and untainted investigation, and I must possess the authority to disclose our findings to the American public.

McCarthy requested that I spearhead the House Republicans’ inquiry into the security shortcomings of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, as well as the work of Pelosi’s Select Committee. I believe this investigation remains crucial for uncovering the truth.”

The ongoing inquiry into the former January 6 select committee, which included Cheney as vice chair alongside another Republican member, as well as the overall security response to the Capitol attack, is just one of the strategies Republicans intend to employ with their newfound majority to extend their previous politically sensitive investigations, according to CNN.
