Twin brother of teen stabbed in heart at school track meet breaks silence

The community of Frisco, Texas, is mourning the devastating loss of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, a talented student-athlete who was fatally stabbed during a high school track meet on April 2.

The tragic event took place shortly after 10 a.m. at David Kuykendall Stadium, where Austin, a junior at Memorial High School, was participating in discus and shot-put competitions alongside his twin brother, Hunter.

“We did everything together,” Hunter shared with WFAA during a heartfelt interview. “Whatever it was, it was always the two of us. We were essentially one person.”

Hunter, who was born just four minutes after Austin, recounted how they were resting in their school’s tent when another student, later identified as 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony from Centennial High School, intruded into their space.

According to Hunter, “We asked him to leave. He became aggressive and started talking disrespectfully, prompting my brother to say, ‘You need to move.’ To which he replied, ‘Make me move.’”

Witnesses reported that Anthony then threatened, “Touch me and see what happens.” He allegedly reached into his backpack, retrieved a black knife, and stabbed Austin once in the chest before fleeing the scene.

“I tried to turn around as quickly as I could,” Hunter recalled, struggling to hold back tears. “I didn’t see the stabbing, but when I looked at my brother… I tried to assist him.”

Hunter cradled his twin brother in his arms as he bled, desperately attempting to staunch the flow of blood until emergency responders arrived. “They pulled me away from him,” he said. “They wouldn’t let me ride in the ambulance. I just wanted to be with him.”

Their father, Jeff Metcalf, hurried Hunter to the hospital. “They were twins—identical twins—and his brother was trying to stop the bleeding. He died in his brother’s arms,” Jeff recounted to NBC.

Jeff later described Austin as “a bright young man” whose “smile could light up a room.” On a GoFundMe page established in his honor, he added that Austin was “aDespite the dedicated efforts of emergency medical personnel, Austin could not be revived and was declared dead due to a single stab wound to his chest.

“I witnessed his final moments,” Hunter recounted. “He was aware of my love for him. I always expressed my desire to emulate him… He was like a big brother to me, even though we are the same age.”

As a prominent linebacker on the football team, Austin’s absence will be profoundly felt both on the field and in the community. “He was exceptional,” Hunter remarked. “We have played sports together our entire lives… This was supposed to be our final year together. It’s truly heartbreaking to think he won’t be there next season.”

Contemplating the senseless nature of the incident, Hunter stated, “I can’t understand why someone would resort to such violence over a trivial disagreement.”

According to ABC News, following the stabbing, Karmelo Anthony disposed of the knife in the bleachers and turned himself in to the police. While being transported in a squad car, he reportedly confessed, “I’m not alleged—I did it.” He later inquired about Austin’s survival and claimed he acted in self-defense.

Anthony, a resident of Frisco, has been charged with first-degree murder, with his bail set at $1 million.

As the community grapples with this devastating loss, tributes continue to emerge for Austin Metcalf—a spirited young man remembered for his kindness, resilience, and the unbreakable bond he shared with his brother.

May he rest in peace.
