A young boy made a 911 call but didn’t say anything, prompting an officer who lived nearby to check on the situation after the call was traced to that location.
It was about 9:30 p.m., and she had just put her youngest child to bed when she received the alert about the boy’s call.
Upon arriving at the house, an 8-year-old boy opened the door. He didn’t appear to be in any danger. In fact, despite being somewhat empty, the house was tidy and organized. He was there with his younger sister.
The boy introduced himself as Mateo, explaining that he called 911 because he and his sister were hungry. They were alone, with no adult present.
After asking them some questions, the officer discovered that their mother worked two jobs, clearly struggling to provide for them.
Mateo mentioned that he looked after his sister, Sophia, while their mom was at work. They usually had a few items in the fridge, but this time, there was just a jug of milk and some ketchup packets.
The officer called for back-up, explaining the situation, and soon enough, help arrived at the house, with a paramedic named Rosa bringing sandwiches for the kids.
Before contacting social services, the officer found the children’s mom who was working at Joe’s Diner.
She was informed that the kids were okay but were really hungry.
The poor woman was distressed. It was clear she was a loving mother who had to work long hours to support her family.
In the following days, both the officer and Rosa thought about Mateo and Sophia.
One day, Rosa came to visit the officer and shared her idea to start a project that would involve officers, paramedics, and community members stepping up for families in need. This project, called Midnight Meals, ended up being a massive success.
Every Friday night, volunteers brought food and toiletries to those in the community who were vulnerable. The response was incredible.
Teachers donated books and school supplies, grocery stores provided canned food, and teenagers volunteered their time.
One night, Rosa and the police officer decided to deliver the items themselves. They went to Mateo and Sophia’s home, but this time it looked different. There was more furniture, more food, and even some decorations.
Mateo instantly recognized the two women while his mother expressed her gratitude for everything they had done for her family.
Rosa had a brand new backpack filled with school supplies for Mateo, who was thrilled with the gift.
Realizing the significant impact of their small act of kindness, the two women reflected on why they chose their careers.
